My DH Made My Birthday Card!

When my dh asked what I wanted for my birthday I told him I wanted him to make me a card... I said "Don't you DARE buy me a card at the store - all I want is for you to make me a card". Well last night I didn't see him for a few hours in the evening... he was in his workshop, which isn't unusal... what I didn't know was that he was making this masterpiece!!

Everything on this card with the exception of the cardstock is from his workshop - plus he made sure all the IMPORTANT details are all included:

1. MAIN IMAGE - The heart is cut from an old piece of innertube rubber. It's pierced with a copper wire.

2. LAYERS - He added layers of sand paper for some texture. He admited he borrowed my Modge Podge to adhere the sandpaper cause he didn't want to use the Super Glue that he used on the rest of the embellishments.

3. RIBBON - Instead of ribbon, he laced faux catgut (I don't know any other name for this stuff) around the card. I taught him well... he knows you need ribbon on a card!

4. HARDWARE - He added some hardware... it's not Hodgepodge Hardware, but instead it's wood joiners and star washers.

5. EMBELLISHEMENTS - The corner embellishment is fantastic. He twisted multi colored wire and splayed the ends. He stapled the wire down, so the steel wool was added to cover the staples.

6. COLOR - This is my favorite part.... he said that once he got it together it was a little bland and needed some color.... so he sprinkled carpenters chalk in red over the top of the card and shook it off. You can see spots of red on the heart, sandpaper and lacing.

Wil knows how important it is to mark your work with your name or a logo... so he left a fingerprint on the back of the card so there is no doubt who made this!

OMG... I had to quick add this additional note! The thumbprint on the back was completely intentional - plus he said he had to try out a few ways of doing it. He wanted a greasy thumbprint without it being too greasy, so he had to "stamp off" once to get the right intensity. How funny is that??

The inside of the card was stamped. I'm impressed that he did such a good job of centering the image and sentiment, especially since I know that this sentiment is a tiny bit crooked on the block.

One last detail is the duct tape on the inside cover. He told me he really wanted to add duct tape to the card because... well... What's a card WITHOUT duct tape?? But he didn't want to add it to the front because it would clutter up his layout - lol!! So he used it on the inside to cover up the staples.

All joking aside... this really is a pretty good card for his first card! The layout is good, just the right amount of embellishement without being too much, and nice use of color. Isn't this the sweetest birthday present?? I love that he listened to my simple (and joking) request then went down to his workshop to make this... and actually thought it through. I think I'll keep him around!

I'm sure that card means more to you than a lot of other gifts he's given. I know it would for me. I'd be out getting a shadow box to display it in and cherish it forever. I'd take a thought-filled card like this over diamonds anyday!

I don't often comment but I love reading your blog.

I think I'm in love with your husband! This is the most wonderful gift I could imagine. Very obviously made with love - have you taken it to be framed yet???

Tami in OH said...

oh, he's a keeper for sure - what a great creative and loving gesture this is - awesome!!! :)
I think you need to frame it and display it somewhere.

That is absolutely awesome! I love the layers, the chalk, even the duct tape, all of it, but what is out of this world is the way he "left his mark" by using his thumb print.

He did a fabulous job...I'm thinking we ladies might need to "case" his idea to create some masculine cards for the guys in our lives.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely wonderful job he did on the card and gift for your BD. He is as talented as you are! What other creations does he usually make in his workshop? Funny that he might be getting 'cased' now!

Oh Michelle, this jut makes my eyes well up with tears. That is the sweetest thing! I asked for the same this year on Valentine's Day.. unfortunately, my hubby didn't come through :(. You have a prince there, girlie! He did an awesome job, too!

Anonymous said...

this is the best gift he could give you-you are so lucky. I love all the thought that went into it. I know how it feels (although your card is hands down way cooler than the one I got) to get a handmade card from hubby. Last mother's day, my dh went into my room and put together a card from some scraps on my desk. It was nothing fancy and he hand wrote the sentiment, I didn't care, it was the most touching thing he'd done in a long time. I think I even teared up. Tell your DH we think he is a rock star! He even made it to the Favorites thread on SCS.
